The idea behind it

Gui Gui builds every pack around the same sequence, which the brand calls the beautify-your-slime routine. It runs like this.

1. Reveal. Open the jar. Find out which slime and which character you got.
2. Boost. Work in the booster until the texture is right.
3. Decorate. Add charms, beads and the decoration sachets.
4. Discover. Uncover the hidden figurine or medallion.
5. Finish. Add the last of the sparkle and display it.

That is the difference between this and a jar of slime. The child is making something, not just holding something. It takes about twenty minutes the first time, and the result goes on a shelf.

Collecting is the second half of the product

Most Gui Gui packs are blind. You know the range, not the pack. The Mystery and Fruity Glow lines each run to 13 different slimes, the K-Pop Demon Hunters line has four characters, and there is a limited-edition slime hiding in more than one of them.

Whether that is a feature or a nuisance depends on your child. A collector loves it. A child who wanted one specific colour will not. If you need certainty, buy a named pack like the Cinnamoroll Slime rather than a blind one.

Textures, because they are the thing kids argue about

Across the range there are seven named textures. Clear, Gloss, Butter, Cloud, Crunch, Jelli and Shimmer. Which ones you get depends on the pack. The mini and mystery packs run four. The Fruity Glow line runs six. The Salish Mega Pack runs all seven.

Everything is scented, and the scent is part of the collecting rather than an add-on.

Which one should you actually buy

Four situations cover most people.

• Party bags or a small reward. The AED 30 Mini Single Pack. It clips onto a bag and costs less than a cinema ticket.
• A birthday present that has to look like one. The AED 199 Mega Slime Haul.

The two lines within the range

Gui Gui splits into two families, and knowing which one a child is in makes the choice much easier.

Beautify Your Slime. The core line. Character-led, figurine inside, 13 to collect, and the five-step routine is the centre of it. This is the collecting line. The Mystery Single Pack at AED 75, the licensed packs, and the two mega kits all sit here.

Fruity Glow. Organised around scent, colour and texture rather than characters. Six textures across the line, 13 slimes to collect, including a limited edition. The single pack is AED 65 and the Deluxe Twin Pack is AED 149.

A child who talks about characters wants the first. A child who talks about how it feels or smells wants the second. Both cost the same at entry level, so it is worth asking.

What twenty minutes with one actually looks like

Worth knowing before you buy, because it sets expectations for everyone.

The jar comes out. The slime is revealed, which is the loudest thirty seconds. Then the booster goes in and gets worked through by hand, which takes a few minutes and is the part that feels like slime in the way children expect.

Then decorating, which is the longest stage. Charms, beads and sachets go in one at a time, and this is where a child either takes their time or dumps everything in at once. Nudging them towards the first is the only real parenting required.

The figurine or medallion comes out, then a final sparkle, then the lid goes on and it goes on a shelf.

What surprises most parents is how much of it is quiet.

Safety and age

Storing it so it lasts

Gui Gui slime lasts weeks with two habits and days without them.

• Lid on immediately. Not at the end of the day. At the end of the session.
• Out of the heat. Not a windowsill, not a balcony, and never a parked car. UAE summer heat turns slime runny and it does not recover.

Stiff slime can usually be revived with a booster and some working by hand. Slime that has picked up hair and carpet fibre should be thrown away rather than rescued.

Why exclusive matters here
